Special Collections is part of the University’s Library Services and it takes care of rare books, manuscripts and archives. It is one of the largest Special Collections in the South of England and holds over 600,000 items. The collection includes fine examples of medieval manuscripts, early printed books, significant holdings of 18th century works and highly important 19th and 20th century collections of personal papers, archival material, and literature.

Our Learning Offer

We use our unique collection to provide experiences and resources that enrich pupils’ learning, to inspire teachers and to create opportunities for pupils to gain first-hand experience of primary historical resources.

Example Project

After school clubs: we explore a theme using our collection - for example, The Power of Print offers Key Stage 3 pupils 6 - 12 weekly workshops (depending on schools' preference) to investigate the history of printing. From manuscripts written by Medieval scribes to contemporary zine makers, pupils learn from the collection and then try out techniques they've learnt about. This could be calligraphy, applying gold leaf or using a printing press, for example. Every session is hands on and tailored to the groups' interests and ability.
